1970 Nationwide

After decades of trashing our planet with rivers burning and smog in cities becoming unbearable, Senator Gaylord Nelson had an inspiration to change how we treated the planet.

Events across the nation included teach-ins, protests, concerts, rallies, river and street cleanups and much more.  These pictures are just a few examples.

For a full history of how Earth Day began, visit Earth Day Network.

The increase in public pressure for change that began in 1970 led to:

  • Passage of the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act
  • Creation of the Environmental Protection Agency
  • Defeat of congressional candidates who opposes environmental protections

1970 -1989 in St. Louis

1970

St. Louis took up the challenge of celebrating the earth and many Earth Day events were organized across the area.  AG John C Danforth and other political and environmental leaders spoke to crowds at University of Missouri-St. Louis.  St. Louis University students had cleanup events. The St. Louis Scuba Club cleaned up Post-Distpatch Lake in Forest Park.  And it all culminated in an Eco Fair celebration in Forest Park.

1980

  • 10th Earth Day celebrated at the Arch

1989

In 1989, teacher and rain forest advocate Matt Diller led a small group that organized the first of many consecutive Earth Day Festivals in St. Louis. The popularity and success of local and national events in 1990 for the 20th Anniversary of Earth Day, prompted organizers to find ways to educate St. Louisans about Earth Day, every day.

  • Matt Diller – Festival Organizer

From Matt Diller – “Almost got shut down due to no money to pay for million dollar insurance policy. I had to cut lawns to make the last few dollars, came to the park office. They were just closing and said “too late.” I begged and begged, and they finally stamped the permit.”
