2018 Festival Interns Summary
Scope: Seeking recent graduates or college students (in their final year of study) currently working toward an event planning, communications, or related degree, to assist St. Louis Earth Day staff during the planning and on-site execution of the St. Louis Earth Day Festival. Internships are non-compensated, but are golden opportunities to gain critical experience, contacts, and skills that will make a difference on a resume. Candidate will work side by side with staff during the entire event. Internship time frame: Mid-December 2017 to early May 2018.
Description: Candidates need to be dedicated, flexible, and have strong interest in obtaining significant event planning experience, knowledge, and skills in coordinating large, public outdoor events. Candidate must have passion and allegiance for sustainability practices and belief in the St. Louis Earth Day mission. Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds, have ability to stand/walk for long periods of time, work long hours (during 2 weeks leading up to and during the event), and have own transportation or reliable alternative.
Time requirement for all positions:
- Bi-weekly Festival planning meetings beginning in December in addition to 10-20 office hours per week.
- Full-day availability at Recycling Extravaganza (date TBD)
- Availability at evening vendor orientation, volunteer training, and post-Festival session
- Up to 20 hours weekly availability in April (marketing will need more in March)
- Up to 10 hour daily availability from Thursday, April 19 – Monday, April 23
- More time as needed to be discussed with each supervisor
Event Details: The 2018 St. Louis Earth Day Festival will be held on April 21-22, 2018 on the Muny grounds in Forest Park. Event hours for both days will be 11 am – 5 pm. The Festival is known for being the epicenter for all things sustainability in the St. Louis Region, featuring cutting edge green technology which is introduced to the world at the event.
St. Louis Earth Day Festival is the longest running Earth Day celebration in the U.S. and largest, most sustainable Earth Day event in the country. Attendance in 2017 was estimated at 60,000+ with about 250 vendors participating, which encompass a variety of green services, products, and social endeavors. Twenty-plus restaurants, most of which are certified in our Green Dining Alliance (GDA) program, provide sustainably grown, produced, and prepared food items, many of which are vegan or vegetarian dishes. Live entertainment by local talent performers run continuously throughout the event on 2 stages. Educational and art activities are available during the event that are inclusive for all ages. Experience areas at the Festival include: Arts & Crafts, Earth Day Cafe, Energy & Green Building, Farmers Market, Home & Pets, Nature & Wildlife, Pit Stop, Reduce/Reuse/Recycle, Social Sustainability, Sponsor Row, Alternative Transportation & Fuels, Wellness & Spirituality, and Youth Corner.
Recycling On the Go Intern (Assistant to the ROG Director)
- Assist with execution of REX in beginning of April
- Conduct program supply audit prior to Festival and make recommendations of supplies needed
- Participate in ROG volunteer training
- Collaborate to create a logistical plan for waste reduction at the Festival
- Assist with communication with food vendors/vendors/sponsors about appropriate materials to bring to Festival, both food service ware and giveaways
