Matt Diller honored at Founder’s Day

On Wednesday, February 8th, St. Louis Earth Day honored Matt Diller, 3rd grade teacher at The College School, for organizing the very first of the 27 consecutive Earth Day Festivals in St. Louis. An avid hiker, Matt was presented with a handmade walking stick made by Unique Sticks of the Ozarks from Missouri hickory wood.

Matt began organizing the 1989 Earth Day Festival in St. Louis, to recognize the 20th anniversary of the first Earth Day Festival. It was held in Creve Coeur Park. Matt shared a story with the group about how he raised the money for the event permit by mowing lawns.

The Founder’s Day party, hosted by our sponsor, Schlafly at the Tap Room, followed the annual meeting of St. Louis Earth Day’s Advisory Council. The Advisory Council was formed 3 years ago of a group of former SLED board members, community partners, and environmental experts as a way to broaden the pool of expertise guiding the organization. They group has also assisted with the strategic planning process. Matt Diller has been part of the Advisory Council since its inception.

Friends of Earth Day

Founder’s Day also featured the newly formed Friends of Earth Day group, who will begin recruiting members and holding monthly socials to grow their capcity to support St. Louis Earth Day.
