ROG off to a great start in 2015

Though we are halfway through 2015 on the calendar, the Recycling On the Go program event recycling season has just really begun.

We officially kicked off the 2015 season with the Ancient Order of Hibernians St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dogtown in March, followed shortly by the Earth Day Festival in April. We worked with several other new partners this spring by providing recycling at Cherokee Street’s Cinco de Mayo celebration and the weekly Twilight Tuesday concerts at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park.

Monthly Sauce Food Truck Fridays began in May welcomed record crowds and enjoyed perfect weather. Events like Food Truck Fridays and the Girls on the Run 5K allow us to pull out all of our tricks and showcase how an outdoor event can get as close to zero waste as possible:

  1. Vendors are required to serve on recyclable or compostable serviceware
  2. 4-6 sorting stations are placed throughout the event, in addition to stand alone recycling bins
  3. Waste stations are staffed to educate attendees about recycling and composting their waste

In June we provided waste diversion at many events such as the Green Homes Festival, Zoofari, and ended the month at Soldiers Memorial Downtown for Pride Fest. We collected 40% more recyclables than Pride Fest 2014, despite several obstacles. Our staff and volunteers even went the extra mile to sort through trash bins to rescue the recyclables from their path to the landfill.

Pride-results

July started off with a BANG at Fair St. Louis in Forest Park. Our focus at this event was collecting recyclables, primarily at the entrances. Over the course of 3 days, we successfully gathered 100 cubic yards of recyclables at this event. Again, without the help volunteers and staff, we would not have had such success!

Recycling On the Go has events scheduled through November, and welcomes volunteers to help at any and all of them.
