SqWires

My name is Rachel Price, and I am the St. Louis Earth Day summer Marketing Intern. Since I’m new to St. Louis, I thought I would spend some personal time this summer exploring, and specifically trying to visit as many Green Dining Alliance Restaurants as I could to further help me understand the role of St. Louis Earth Day in our community. I’ll write about GDA-certified restaurants I visit this summer, and my impressions of how they implement “green” strategies into their operations.

3rd Stop: SqWires

Location: Lafayette Square

Genre: American – Seasonal, Local

Rating:

SqWires definitely earned its 5 star rating.

Located in the historic neighborhood of Lafayette Square in the old Western Wire Factory, SqWires possesses a unique, environmentally friendly decor. The old Victorian era buildin

g  exhibits exposed brick and beams, a restored pulley system, antique light fixtures, and church pews in the waiting area.

The outdoor patio, enclosed by flowers and greenery boasts vintage table and chair sets.

The menu at SqWires changes with the seasons. Fresh ingredients – from produce to cheeses, bakery items, sausage, and even ice cream and tap beers – are all locally sourced. According to SqWires website, SqWires is one of 40 restaurants under “St. Louis Originals,” who all strive to promote local food and the resurgence of St. Louis neighborhoods.

I thought Bailey’s Range had good burgers, until I tried the Turkey Burger at SqWires. It is by far the best turkey burger I’ve ever had. Undoubtedly fresh and not frozen, the burger had the feel of a beef burger, unlike a typical frozen turkey burger that can be pressed and dry. The burger was served with local yellow and red tomatoes, lettuce, and onion, and a side of mixed greens with homemade dressing.

The verdict: SqWires has a phenomenal, locally sourced and fresh seasonal menu, with a vintage decor and a welcoming, friendly staff that completes an incredible dining experience. If you’re one to support local establishments that strive to promote not only locally sourced ingredients, but also St. Louis historic neighborhoods as a whole, check out SqWires. I guarantee you’ll enjoy your experience.
