Sustainability Comes to Dutchtown!

The Thomas Dunn Learning Center is playing an important role in providing accessible food to those in need, providing education, and combating food waste.  TDLC works with STL Food Share, a group of volunteers that organize food pickups from grocery stores like Whole Foods and Fresh Thyme. They pick up food that the grocery stores are no longer able to put on the shelves and would otherwise throw into the landfill.

STL Food Share makes a weekly drop at TDLC where they’re able to offer free fresh produce and vegan options for those in need of food. TDLC is able to provide groceries for 35-50 households a week. This not only helps battle food insecurities, but it also plays a pivotal role in diverting food out of the landfill which creates methane gas that releases into our atmosphere. Furthermore, all the co2 emissions, resources, time, and energy that went into producing the food is not for nothing.

Thomas Dunn Learning Center offers several year-round classes and resources to promote individual growth and enhance the community’s quality of life. The Green Dining Alliance plans to track food waste diversion metrics and work with TDLC using GDA chefs to lead classes on how to be sustainable in the kitchen.
